WIRRAL VIKING CHURCHES HERITAGE WALK

Church Heritage

Whether you are interested in the area's history and heritage or simply seeking a place of peace and tranquillity, the churches in Wirral are impressive and inspirational buildings that are sometimes overlooked by visitors.

While their continuing primary purpose is to provide places of public worship, they are treasured for their beauty and for their connections with local history and as focal points in their communities.

St Mary and St Helen Church, High Street, Neston

A beautiful church rebuilt in 1875 on a 12th century site of a stone church, with the possibilty of an earlier church on the same site.

Carved Saxon stones were found buried beneath the floor during demolition in 1874. Some have carved figures on them, others are patterned, another is a
pre-Norman cross with interlacing, and they can be found within the church.

In and around the church are four medieval grave covers and a headstone, one of a priest. When the Doomsday Book was compiled in 1085, there was a priest credited to Neston which was at that time a small hamlet.
