Burton

An attractive north Cheshire village of stone and thatch with views across the River Dee to Wales. The main street curves past a variety of small cottages and many are built on the sandstone bedrock that outcrops at different places.

Burton was an important place during burton villagethe Middle Ages, acting as a main port for the crossing to Ireland. But following the silting up of the estuary at Dee put paid to the crossings and now the area is separated by fields and marshes.

The village winds around Burton Hill, a wooded feature now owned by the National Trust.

Ancient church of St Nicholas, built in 1721 with the chancel being rebuilt in 1870. Consisting of two naves, an 18th century communion window and an arcade of five bays.

To the end of the village is the Old School House, founded by Bishop Wilson in 1724.
